Life is a crazy twist and turn of events and sometimes adventures get thrown your way that you'd never expect. A few months ago I was given the incredible opportunity of addressing envelopes for my best friend's wedding. I have done calligraphy for years and I did not take this job lightly. I practiced and practiced until I knew the font was perfect for her invitations. I found the art of writing relaxing as I addressed the 150 envelopes and then again as I addressed the return envelopes. When I was finished I was so proud of my work, but little did I know what was coming.
In the weeks that followed, I was overwhelmed with the amount of compliments I received from the guests who had received an invitation adorned with my handwriting. I couldn't believe it. People who had no idea who I was loved my work. My family and friends encouraged me to try to start a little business using my talents. I started working at it, only half-believing that others would be interested at all.
One of the biggest questions I asked myself over and over again was, "where do I start?" It seemed like such a huge task to start and run my own business and I was a little overwhelmed at the beginning. I think the most important thing I learned was to just start. It's okay to not have all the answers right away. Learning is part of the fun. If you want to start something, just do it. Put in the time and the work and just start however you know how. The rest will fall into place and if it's something you love you'll enjoy every step of your progress.
After I started, I was once again completely blown away. I've started booking work and networking with others in the wedding industry and I am having an absolute blast! It is so much fun to talk about weddings 24/7 and to get to use the talent God gave me to help others create their perfect day.
I had coffee with a colleague of mine and she said, "Isn't it a bit humbling to think couple's would entrust you with a piece of the biggest day of their lives?" I love that way of thinking. Couples who are about to spend the rest of their lives together trust many vendors with bits and pieces of that and I think it's incredible that I am being given the opportunity to be one of the trusted.
I'm going to use this blog to share bits of my work as well as pieces of advice I learn along the way. I'm so excited to see where this journey will take me and I wanted to share my beginnings with y'all. I definitely did not know this was where my life would lead me but here I am! I always joke that Karaligraphy is a product of simply having good handwriting but I think it's also so much more. I hope to create each letter as individual as the couple it is benefitting and make my work a perfect compliment for their big day!
So there's a piece of me and how I started. I'm super excited for the amazing things I know are coming!
